Masseria Setteporte

Purchase Masseria Setteporte Etna Rosso

The Portale family has passed their winemaking tradition down through generations. The farm was first modernized by Ferdinando Portale and in 2002, Piero Portale decided to carry on his father’s project and took the farm from its original 12 hectares to 27 hectares.

The vineyards are cultivated on south facing terraces at an altitude between 650 and 800 meters above sea level where the volcanic soil, the high altitudes and the Mediterranean climate create a prime growing zone for the Nerello Mascalese grape.

The winery and the vineyards are on the Southwest side of the volcano in the comune of Biancavilla-- a rather rare spot for winemaking these days on the volcano. The mesoclimate is here is warmer than the north face of Mt. Etna. In addition to the warmer climate, the soil in Biancavilla also adds to the unique structural and flavor profile of Masseria Setteporte’s wines.

Biancavilla has exposed soils from the Ellitico epoch (see Etna DOC blog post) which is older, less fertile, and has a unique mineral composition. Such exposition and soil makes for a powerful, full, tannic, yet a bright, medium+ acidic wine. Masseria Setteporte are masters of viticulture in this particular area. You truly will not find a wine from Etna of such quality at a more affordable pricepoint.

Masseria Setteporte is a certified organic winery.
