PIERO MANCINI
Piero Mancini spent his childhood in Gallura, in the countryside with his grand-parents looking after the family’s vineyards. These memories brought him back from Cagliari (southern Sardegna) where he abandoned his work as a dentist to start his adventure in winemaking.
In 1989, he achieved his dream with the opening of his Cantina delle Vigne, in Olbia. His production philosophy is based on “Climate-Soil-Vineyard”, aware that high quality grapes come from proper vineyard management and should represent the uniqueness of the climate and soil of the local area.
Thanks to his work in establishing his name alongside quality winemaking, Piero Mancini’s Cantina delle Vigne wines still to this day rank among the best of Sardinia, known and appreciated all over the world.
The vineyards are in Gallura, north-east of Sardinia, in Balajana (commune of Luogosanto), Scolombrino, Montelitu and Ciabattu and are mainly located on decomposing granite soils at an altitude range from 100 to 500 m. The granite and sandy solis provide excellent drainage and a good level of mineral salts rich in potassium. The climate is warm mediterranean mitigated by cooling breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The main cultivated variety is Vermentino. In fact, the Vermentino di Gallura is the only DOCG in Sardegna. The temperature variation and the constant mitigation effect from the sea allows the grapes to maintain their rich flavor profile (at times, tropical) as well as minerality and acidity. The environment provides similar qualities to the red wines, especially the Cannonau, which is light, fresh, red fruited but with savory mineral and herbal notes.
